PIGRISK: REDUCING DISEASE RISKS AND IMPROVING FOOD SAFETY IN SMALLHOLDER PIG VALUE CHAINS IN VIETNAM

_AACIAR_Pig_Risk_Logos.jpg

Name:

Reducing disease risks and improving food safety in smallholder pig value chains in Vietnam

Funded by

Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research ( ACIAR)

Implemented by

International livestock Research Institute (IRLI) http://www.ilri.org

Hanoi School of Public Health

http://www.huph.edu.vn )

Hanoi University of Agricultre

http://www.hua.edu.vn/eng/

Duration

5 years From 1 June 2012 to 31 May 2017

Objective

Objective 1: To assess impacts of pork-borne diseases on human health and the livestock sector and to identify critical points/opportunities for risk management.

Objective 2: To develop and test incentive-based innovations to improve management of human and animal health risks in smallholder pig value chains.

Objective 3: To sustainably improve capacity to assess and manage risks in smallholder pig value chains by engaging stakeholders and co-generating evidence.

Methodology

Important elements of the research approach are:

- Existing strong linkages between the research team and key national policy-makers will result in those policymakers being involved in the project from inception.

- Stakeholder engagement and ownership will be enabled through an explicit and structured communication strategy developed at the start of the project.

- Multi-disciplinary research on human and animal health risks (value chain, quantitative risk assessment, epidemiology and economics) increases the relevance of research outputs and hence likelihood of use.

- Links to international R&D projects including ACIAR projects and a closely related World Bank project (the Livestock Competitiveness and Food Safety Project, LIFSAP) provide a channel for two-way results sharing and impact.

- The project will be an integral part of CRP 4.3 (Agriculture for Improved Nutrition and Health) and CRP 3.7 (More meat, milk and fish by and for the poor).  The smallholder pig sector in Vietnam was identified as one of only 9 value chains where CRP 3.7 research will focus in the next 3 years.
