FBLI Vietnam First Stakeholder Workshop in Hanam

The project ‘Field Building Leadership Initiative (FBLI): Advancing Ecohealth in South East Asia’ is a joint project of different partner countries and funded by the International Development Research Center (IDRC), Canada. In Vietnam it is implemented by the Center for Public Health and Ecosystem Research (CENPHER), under the Hanoi School of Public Health (HSPH) in Hanam province, with the research titled: ‘Using Ecohealth Approach for a Better Management of Livestock Waste in Hanam Province, Vietnam’. The first FBLI Vietnam Stakeholder Workshop was held in Hanam province, Vietnam from 19th to 20th January 2013. The workshop aimed to gain the consultations of different related stakeholders on the research plan of FBLI Vietnam.

The two-day event consists of an indoor session and a field visit to different farming household in the targeted communes. The indoor workshop took place in the meeting hall of the General Hospital of Kim Bang district, Hanam province drawing the attention of more than 60 participants including heads of the People Committee of Hanam province, the Provincial Department of Health, the Preventive Health Care station of Hanam province, heads of the local authority of Kim Bang district and the locals from two communes of Hoang Tay and Le Ho.

Prof. Le Vu Anh, Dean of the HSPH, open the event with remark on the significance of the participation of the local community into the project, which in his view is the crucial point to bring the successful results. Dr. Hein Mallee representing the donor – the IDRC also shared the same opinion when attending the workshop.

The field day opened with the visit to the Health Care Station of Hoang Tay commune, being informed with the current health care service system of the commune. Mr. Tuan, the Head of the Station then took the team on an adventure to different households in the communes who are using different methods in managing the human and animal waste, which includes the one tested and implemented in the context of the NCCR (National Center for Competency in Research – NCCR North-South)/ HSPH project.

After the event, the team hoped to deliver a better and more concrete plan for the research. The event also marked the beginning of the next busy periods for the whole team.
