CENPHER Research Presentations at Asia Pacific Conference on Food Safety, Zoonoses and EcoHealth

The 4th Food Safety and Zoonoses Symposium for Asia Pacific, which also included the 2nd Regional Ecohealth Symposium, was held from 3rd to 5th, August 2015 in Chiang Mai, Thailand. This symposium brought together researchers from 11 Asian nations, Germany, Portugal and the United States, giving them an opportunity to present research results, get professional updates and networking as well as collaboration.

At this symposium, CENPHER has 02 representatives, Dr. Nguyen Viet Hung, joint researcher and MVPH. Dang Xuan Sinh, researcher, and have attended and presented the update results of PigRISK project and Ecohealth researches in Southeast Asia.

Dr. Nguyen Viet Hung delivered the keynote speech “EcoHealth Research in South East Asia: Regional Synthesis and Examples from Key Programs.” The report reviews ecohealth activities in Southeast Asia in the past decade and provides an insight into the challenges and the way forward for Ecohealth in the region. The speech also promotes the approach of EcoHealth, which combines medicine, veterinary medicine, ecology, biology and other disciplines, to researchers in Southeast Asia.

Researcher Dang Xuan Sinh presented three studies related to hygiene along the pork value chain in Vietnam, perceptions and practices on pork production and antibiotic, heavy metals residues in pork at wet markets in Vietnam. All three reports emphasised the need of focusing on food safety, risk management and risk reduction along pork value chain.

The symposium was organized by the Veterinary Public Health Center for Asia Pacific (VPHCAP) at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Chiang Mai University, University of Minnesota, Freie Universitat Berlin, Germany, ComAcross Project and International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI).
