Recruitment: Research assisstant in Food Safety and Risk Analysis at Hanoi School of Public Health

Position: Research assisstant

Institution and Project

Hanoi School of Public Health (HSPH, www.hsph.edu.vn) was formally established in 2001 as the sole university in Vietnam for developing modern public health as an agent of change for protecting human health through training and research. During the past decade, HSPH has made remarkable progress in offering degree programs in public health (BSc, MSc, and PhD) and hospital management (MSc), as well as in translating research findings to inform policy. The Center of Public Health and Ecosystem Research (CENPHER, http://cenpher.huph.edu.vn ) is a newly developed research unit at HSPH. The mission of CEPHER is to study the health and well-being impacts of environmental, ecological, cultural, socio-economic, and demographic factors using the integrative approaches of Ecohealth/One Health with special focus on South East Asia, with links to common issues in Africa. We focus on the links between health and agriculture, infectious and zoonotic diseases, chemical pollution, and food safety and nutrition, from the lab to the field.

The research project “Reducing risk and improving food safety in smallholder pig value chains in Vietnam” (PigRISK, http://pigrisk.wikispaces.com ) is funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) and coordinated by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). Reflecting a multi-disciplinary approach, the project will bring together expertise in smallholder pig systems, risk analysis, socio-economics, value chain assessment, veterinary epidemiology and public health. The core partners with ILRI are the HSPH and Hanoi University of Agriculture, who will utilize resources and skills from a wide range of partner organizations.

The main objectives of PigRISK are: i) to assess impacts of pork-borne diseases on human health and the livestock sector and to identify critical points/opportunities for risk management; ii) to develop and test incentive-based innovations to improve management of human and animal health risks in smallholder pig value chains; and iii) to sustainably improve capacity to assess and manage risks in smallholder pig value chains by engaging stakeholders and co-generating evidence.
