RRR Project – Health Component Research Activities

A partnership international research project on Resource Recovery and Reuse (RRR), which is funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), has been launched in 2012 and will include Hanoi as one of the 4 study sites. The project involves six institutions namely the World Health Organization (WHO) based in Geneva (Switzerland), the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) based in Colombo (Sri Lanka), the International Centre for Water Management Services (CEWAS) based in Willisau (Switzerland), the Department of Water and Sanitation in Developing Countries (Sandec) of the Swiss Federal Institute for Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag) based in Zurich (Switzerland) and the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) based in Basel (Switzerland).

The Swiss TPH and the Center for Public Health & Ecosystem Research (CENPHER) at Hanoi School of Public (HSPH) convened to be partners for the conduct of the RRR project health components implementation in the study site of Hanoi. In 2013, the project will be marked by a feasibility study phase of six months that the city workshop held in Hanoi on May 2013 helped the partners to discuss in details an action plan for the convened objectives.

Dr. Pham Duc Phuc, on behalf of the CENPHER , will coordinate the communication, administration and research activities in Hanoi. The study carried out in Hanoi will focus on collecting secondary data at the city level that is relevant for the feasibility studies of selected BM. This will be done according to the methodology that was discussed during the workshop and cover the issues namely health-relevant national legal requirements, regulations and guidelines, major public health initiatives, disease profile of the urban, peri-urban, and rural environments, relevant peer-reviewed literature covering the Hanoi context, conduct health risk assessments of selected existing RRR business cases (6-10 cases in total) by means of the tool that has specifically been developed for this task.
