Dr. Pham Duc Phuc

Dr. Pham Duc Phuc earned his Ph.D  in Epidemiology (December 2011) from the University of Basel - Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute with the thesis “Wastewater and excreta use in agriculture in Vietnam: health risks and environmental impacts”. He joined the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE) in 2000 as a researcher on Health, Water, Sanitation and Environment. Dr. Phuc has been involved in many research projects on health risks related to water and sanitation, especially infectious diseases. In  2008 joined the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH, Basel) as a Ph.D student on Epidemiology, Microbiology and Environmental Sanitation within the NCCR North-South programme. The main focus of his study was to test the conceptual framework on the combined assessment of health and environmental sanitation in Southeast Asia (SEA), a project collaboration with Sandec/Eawag (Zurich).

In 2012, he joined Hanoi School of Public Health (HSPH), Vietnam as researcher and lecturer, conducting research in collaboration with staff and students (PhD and MSc) of HSPH. He has been developing and participating in different initiatives with national and international donors to generate funding for research and training on health risks assessment in water, environmental sanitation and food safety. Dr. Phuc is one of the founders of Center for Public Health and Ecosystem Research (CENPHER) at HSPH promoting One Health and Ecohealth in Vietnam.

He is member of the strategic planning committee of Southeast Asia One Health University Network (SEAOHUN) and member of Vietnam One Health University Network (VOHUN). He is working at the interface between environment and health, using an interdisciplinary approach to focus on the impact of sanitation on health.
