PAMS “Development of a training package on health risk assessment related to water, sanitation and food in Vietnam - SEA-3_01”

Water hygiene and food safety are concerns of public health in Vietnam, especially when the outbreak of severe acute diarrhea (including cholera) happened in the north of the country in 2007 and 2008. Many measures have been applied in the country to control the sanitation and safety of water and food, of which, health risk assessment is an effective measure that has been applied in many countries in the world. However, this method has just newly introduced to Vietnam and has not been applied in a broad scale in the country.

The purpose of the PAMS is to put the results of the NCCR N-S research on health risk assessment into practice by involving local and national partners through the development of a training module and testing the module. The PAMS aims at developing a training package on health risk assessment related to water supply, sanitation and food safety in the context of South East Asia focusing on Vietnam. The project was implemented by Hanoi School of Public Health in collaboration with National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) and National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE) in Hanoi, and with technical supports from International Livestock Research Institute and Swiss TPH


1. To develop a training package on heath risk assessment/QMRA related to water supply, sanitation and food safety

2. To test the developed training package with various stakeholders of health risk assessment using an approach learn by doing.

3. To revise and apply the developed training package in another JACS SEA country.


Activity 1: Developed training curriculum: December 2009 to February 2010.

Activity 2: Developed the training package: March 2010 to July 2010

Activity 3: Organized training courses to pilot the training package, applied activie teaching and learning methods: August 2010.

Activity 4: Revised training package: October 2010 – December 2010.

Activity 5: Organized the final workshop: January 2011.

Expected output and outcomes:

1. A training package on heath risk assessment and QMRA related to water, sanitation and food safety was developed.

2. Training courses to test the developed training course were organised.

3. Increased capacity in health risk assessment of HSPH, NIN and NIHE through the development and provision of training courses.

4. Increased awareness among local and national authorities on the environmental health risk assessment and QMRA (applied in water, sanitation and food safety).

5. Close collaboration between national institutes and university in training and research on environmental health risk assessment, QMRA and build new project(s) in this field.
